Welcome to BenchRack

Rack-scale firmware development. On your desk.

BenchRack is a design pattern by 3mdeb that mirrors rack-scale systems on commodity hardware, so teams can develop and test firmware locally before production deployment.

Why it matters

Full rack systems are expensive and physically large, and low-level firmware work needs local serial console and flash header access. Current workflows require scheduling shared rack time and risk system-wide failures on a single bad flash. BenchRack decomposes a rack system into independently testable, verifiable components.

How it works

A BenchRack combines three parts:

  • Runtime environment (RTE) — controls flashing, power, and serial access remotely.
  • Target infrastructure — the platform-specific hardware under test (server board, accelerators, networking).
  • Optional extra services — additional platform-specific components.

The same blueprint adapts to different rack-scale systems by swapping the target infrastructure.

Reference implementation

The Dasharo BenchRack for the ASRock TURIND8UD-2T/X550 ships today:

  • Single-socket AMD EPYC 9005 series CPU
  • 8x DDR5 RDIMM support
  • 4x PCIe 5.0 / CXL 2.0 x16 slots
  • benchctl tool for remote management
  • coreboot + LinuxBoot firmware stack
